lickety split – a sailing adventure!

Sitting in a quiet little airport in New Bern, NC, I now have found some time to reflect upon this little adventure. Coming in, I fully intended to spend a little time every day chronically the daily events, but as it turns out there’s always something to do whilst sailing.

A few weeks back weeks ago I had a conversation with Tony (owner and captain of our vessel) about his plan to bring his newly purchased PDQ 36 catamaran back to Michigan from the gulf side of Florida. He had asked if I knew anyone who would be interested in being the 4th crewman for the journey. The gears immediately started turning in my head. “Does the 4th need any sailing experience?” “Nope. Just be able to pull a shift each day at the helm steering while the others rested.” Being that I have a fair amount free time during the summer months, plus the growing desire for some sort of adventure, it was hard to not jump at this opportunity. Well, due to an unexpected tragic circumstance, we lost our most experienced crewman/navigator before the trip began. I ended flying down to be the 3rd crewman.

I met up with Tony and Greg midafternoon on Thursday at the St. Lucie Lock and Dam in Stuart, FL. The two of them had already transversed Florida through canals, several locks and across Lake Okeechobee.
